Title: How do Capital Regulation and Risk Respond to Covid-19? Insights of Ownership Structure
Abstract:
This study empirically investigates the effects of global (COVID-19) crisis and ownership structure on capital regulation and risk-taking behavior (financial stability). The analysis uses an unbalanced panel dataset from 32 commercial banks of Bangladesh for the period 2000–2020 (June). Primarily, it uses the two-step system generalized method of moments (2GMM) and later, ranks the attributes and banks based on their degree of influences to capital regulation, risk and financial stability by using Machine Learning Approach. More significantly, COVID-19 makes banks fragile and demands more capital to absorb risk. But the effect of COVID-19 is heterogeneous when we consider ownership structure. Among the diverse ownership styles, Islamic banks and active shareholding show their controlling wheel on capital regulation and risk-taking aptitude (financial stability) during global (COVID-19) crisis. But in normal economic condition, private banks and minority active shareholding can be the good determinants for capital regulation and risk (financial stability). On the other hand, state-owned and large banks have been found as less capitalized and high risky. It also captures that both ownership structure and COVID-19 are considered as significant determinants for capital adequacy, risk, and financial stability. Finally, based on their capital adequacy, less risk-taking aptitude, and better financial stability, Islamic and private banks are the best in comparing to the conventional and state-owned banks.
