| Title: Exploring a blended online flipped class model in a university course | |
| Abstract: Online flipped classrooms are based on constructivism with learner-centered learning environments, considered to be a form of innovative teaching and learning. The purpose of this study was to explore how a blended online flipped class model affected university students’ self-regulated learning (SRL) and teachers’ technological pedagogical and content knowledge (TPACK). This course was implemented for about 16 weeks in one semester. The first two weeks required physical classes to explain the objectives and methods of this course. Synchronous online teaching was implemented for 7 weeks, and asynchronous online learning was implemented for the other 7 weeks. This study adopted a mixed method with a case study approach in one university course. The findings showed a significant difference in SRL related to four dimensions, including environment structuring, task strategies, time management and help seeking. Further, TPACK also showed a significant difference. The instructor uses multiple strategies combined with numerous videos to demonstrate expertise different thematic units within this course. He also uses videos to explain the topics and join in students' discussion, keep track of students' assignments and attendance, evaluate students' learning effectiveness in online teaching, and reflect on and improve his own teaching performance. Implementing online flipped classrooms benefits the instructor’s TPACK. The research implications of this study are provided along with suggestions.

| Biography: Syh-Jong Jang now is a Distinguished Professor at Asia University in Taiwan. He received his PhD in Science Education from the University of Texas at Austin, USA. He served associate dean of International College and the director at Center Of Cross-Strait Academic Exchange, Asia University. He also served Co-Chair and Review Committee in the Field of Science Education of MOST, Taiwan and obtained the highest Teacher Research Award from Chung Yuan Christian University. He was invited as Honor Lecture on Teaching in the Graduate School of Education at Peking University and Honor Lecture on Teaching in the School of Education at Shaanxi Normal University. He has been a visiting Professor at the University of Georgia, USA and FT PGDE(P) Program External Examiner-The Hong Kong Institute of Education. His research expertise is information technologies and TPACK from pre-service and in-service teacher level. He has published a lot SSCI-index research papers which focus on technology in teacher education and innovative science teaching in all levels. These published Journals include Computers in Human Behavior, Computers & Education, BJET, AJET, Educational Research, Higher Education, International Journal of Science Education, Journal of Computer Assisted Learning, etc. He also grants many research projects from Ministry of Science and Technology, Taiwan. | |
