Biography: 

Zhang Wei-Bin, born in 1961, PhD in economics (Umeå University, Sweden), is Professor in Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) since 2000. He was graduated in 1982 from Department of Geography, Beijing University, and was selected by the Ministry of Education as a candidate for study in foreign countries. He was sent to Japan by Chinese government for graduate study in 1983.  He got Master Degree and completed Ph.D course at Department of Civil Engineering, Kyoto University by 1987. During the Kyoto period, he learned economics in leisure and published some articles on economics. He was invited to do research on economics in Umeå University in October, 1987. He completed his dissertation on economic growth theory in June, 1989 with well-known Prof. Michio Morishima as the main examiner. Since then he researched at the Swedish Institute for Futures Studies in Stockholm for 10 years. He also worked as visiting scholars in USA, Japan, Mainland China, Austria, Singapore, and Hong Kong before coming to APU. His main research fields are complexity theory or chaos theory in economics (nonlinear economic dynamics, synergetic economics), economic theory, spatial (urban and regional) economics, monetary economics, ethics (with regards to trust and justice), ancient Confucianism, American civilization, Japan’s modern development, and economic development and modernization of Chinese societies. He single-authorized 380 academic articles (180 in peer-review international journals), 28 academic books in English by well-known international academic publishing houses, and one book of poetry (in Chinese) by a well-known publisher in the field. He is editorial board members of 12 peer-review international journals. Prof. Zhang isthe editorof Encyclopedia of Mathematical Models in Economics(in two volumes) as a part of the unprecedented global effort, The Encyclopedias of Life Support Systems, organized bythe UNESCO. He is now frequently delivering keynote speeches in international conferences on different topics related to his research on complexity theory and the general economic theory.


He has published extensively in monetary economics. His 2009 book “Monetary Growth Theory” by Routledge has been well received in academics. His recent books on economics include: “The General Economic Theory” in 2020 by Springer International Publishing and “Chaos, Complexity, and Nonlinear Economic Theory”, World Scientific (forthcoming)
