Title: Learning without borders: Internationalisation@home efforts at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
Abstract:
Internalisation is a crucial part of all university's degree program yet Covid-19 has suspended nearly all such efforts worldwide for more than 3 semesters. In fact, more than just bridging the time and distance divides of students and teachers, intelligent use of technologies can also help to support internationalisation at home efforts for all institutions. Furthermore, good pedagogical design can also help students to acquire specific skills thereby reducing the skill gaps of 21st Century knowledge workers. This talk will outline the benefits, challenges and opportunities of Internationalisation@home efforts experienced by PolyU staff in the last 3 years. Internationalisation@home is clearly going to stay with increasing influence on curriculum and pedagogical design. Perspectives and learning experience by learners and teachers will also be shared.
Biography:

A futurist with an IT background plus a strong passion in education, Professor Tsui’s teaching philosophies have always been in the use of technologies to transcend learning from a classroom to an ubiquitous online learning environment as well as to involve students and graduates as learning partners.  His work over the last decade has cumulated in, among others, the configuration of Personal Learning Environment and Networks (PLE&N) for over 2000 PolyU students and graduates, as well as the co-creation of curriculum with students and graduates for rapidly advancing business and technology subjects. He is also a strong advocate in the use of Open Educational Resources (OERs) in course content and lead PolyU’s journey in Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) by launching PolyU’s first MOOC in 2015. Professor Tsui is an active sharer. Many of the pedagogies and tools developed by him have also been adopted by colleagues at PolyU and elsewhere. He has developed extensive collaboration with many overseas institutions. While most teachers try to simulate or replicate an appropriate online environment during Covid-19, Professor Tsui designed and enacted the “Global Classroom” where students and teachers from PolyU and third party institutions participate in collaborative learning synchronously and asynchronously – truly an innovation that enables Internationalisation at home to be conducted with no travel needed and benefiting all students. Professor Tsui has received many Teaching and Learning awards over the years including the prestigious Reimagine Education Regional Asia Gold award in 2015 and Platinum award from LearnX Live! In 2021. From 2021, he took on the additional capacity of a Specialist in the Hong Kong Council for the Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ) in the area of online education. He has published an article and his work is also cited in Times Higher Education Campus.
